The remaining VPs and executives charged with making Windows and multimedia great at MS were more worried about random short term initiatives of the year rather than building an early lead technological lead into a dominant category winner. This is product death by a thousand paper cuts from a string of short sighted leaders in charge of MS AV media and content. Instead of owning the categories with both first to market, superior products and a strong multimedia content catalog, the winners in this space are Youtube, Apple, Amazon, Hulu and Netflix. MS should have added the market cap of all those rival companies to it's portfolio by owning all multimedia categories. It's the "oooh shiny" syndrome after V3.0, due to not having vision and long term focus. No movie catalog, no music catalog, no television offerings and no market dominance in tablets for Windows.īut Microsoft simply does not have a "long attention span" and routinely loses interests in promising products and features after about 3 releases. It's 20 years later and MS has lost it's way since the visionary leaders like BillG moved on. Microsoft should have been the winner in AV streaming and multimedia content. That's long before any of the competition that now owns this very lucrative space. Windows MCE, WebTV for Windows, Info Highway PC were there first and have been around since just after Windows 95. Windows 7 Media Center was almost dropped in Windows 8 before Steven Sinofsky saved it - one of his few good calls. Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center and Windows XP for tablets and Zune music player, were NOT rip-offs, clones or copies of other companies efforts, they were innovative original software efforts by hundreds of developers.īut, despite 20 years of early AV leadership, Microsoft is now throwing in the towel on Media Center in Windows 10. But despite having very early lead to market with Music, TV and Movies applications MS never closed the deal on content. This was the era just after Windows 95 through about Windows XP. Back in the mid-nineties, before it was cool to watch TV on your computer and devices, Microsoft Windows used to be the leader in Audio & Video playback.
